The World is Laughing at Us

I really can't believe how weak the west has gotten.  The situation with the 15 British Sailors and Marines in Iran just shows the whole world what weaklings we really are.

As much as I'd like to think things would be different if those were American servicemen that were taken hostage, my gut tells me that they wouldn't.  Nobody wants a war with Iran but how do you ignore aggression like that?

I imagine that eventually Tony Blair will apologize to Iran, much like America did to North Korea in the case with the USS Pueblo, which is still an attraction touted by the North Koreans as a victory over the Imperialist Americans.

I would love to see some sort of embargo or blockade against Iran until the hostages are released but I just don't think America or the UK have the guts.  All I can picture are Roman emperors bribing barbarians as their empire crumbles piece by piece.

Maybe it's inevitable, all great society's eventually become too liberal, while the ones who aren't capitalize on their weakness and win the day.

Abortion

Why do you have to be a Christian to believe that abortion is wrong? Without religion, the main goal of any animal is continuation of the species. Where exactly does killing your young fit into that?

I really don’t understand the debate. Is the opposition to the murder of adults or children considered a solely Christian position? The only debatable part would be in cases of rape or incest, or in cases where the child would not live past birth anyway.

With the exception of rape, pregnancy is a one hundred percent preventable condition. Even as a non-Christian it seems that killing unborn babies so you can go out and have sex is pretty deplorable.

Even in cases of rape, where it would be absurd to expect a mother to raise the child of her rapist, adoption is always an option. I also wonder if the same people who would abort a fetus afflicted with down syndrome would advocate performing euthanasia on a child born with the disease.

Honestly, I really believe most Americans do oppose wholesale abortion and that for the most part the only disagreement comes in the cases mentioned above.

I think the media overhypes the issue and gives an unbalanced amount of coverage to radicals who believe there is nothing wrong with abortion as a form of birth control.

Are we Invincible?

I was listening to Rush earlier today when a democrat called in to say that he took exception to Rush saying that democrats actually wanted us to lose and that's why they want to pull out of Iraq.  The man said that's not the case at all, they just realize that we can't win, and want to avoid wasting more lives in a fruitless effort for Bush to ensure his legacy.  Rush then went on to say that it was frightening that there are Americans who truly believe that America is not capable of winning this war.

First of all, I do think that deep down most democrats do want America to lose the war in Iraq.  The hope for that ultimate 'I told you so' drives their desire to withdraw now.

Secondly, I do not believe that now is the time to pull out of Iraq.  To admit to defeat at the hands of a bunch of poorly organized bomb slingers would send a dangerous message to America's enemies.

However, I think the attitude that it is impossible to lose this war because of the might of America is foolhardy.  If the goal in Iraq is to create a stable, American friendly government that can police itself then that takes more than just shooting people and blowing things up.  It requires a total change in mentality for all the people living there.  While I sincerely hope that we can achieve that goal, we can't stay there forever and efforts to change other people rarely work out very well.

Department of Homeland Security Sucks!

The Department of Homeland Security has a backlog of 600,000 known illegal immigrants, most of which they don't know the whereabouts of anymore according to this.

To me, this just makes it even more obvious that rounding up the 12 million or more people in the U.S. illegally and sending them back to their home countries is an impossible fantasy.  It's a shame that we let it get this bad, but we should really be worrying about how to keep another 12 million from coming here illegally, not imagining unrealistic ways of getting the ones here out.

As much as I hate to say it, there is going have to be some sort of amnesty for illegals already here.  It would be much cheaper to get these people in the system and taxed like everyone else, then to spend all the money it would take to kick them out or worse yet, allowing them to continue to recieve benefits they aren't paying for.

Our Children are Bombarded With Socialist Ideas!

As I sat home with my four year old son this morning, I started to think a little more deeply about the shows he was watching on television. With a few exceptions they mostly were the same shows I watched when I was a kid: Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, etc. In addition to the admirable effort to give pre-schoolers a jump start on counting and reading, they have a few messages for them, messages about sharing and tolerance and forgiveness. While in certain cases these can be good qualities, the attempt to indoctrinate young children with the idea that you should share everything, love everyone and forgive anything doesn't prepare children for the harsh realities of the real world.

At first it seems like a great idea. If everyone shared everything, everybody would have exactly what they needed. Except that that only works if everyone has something to offer. What happens when the number of people with something to offer becomes outnumbered by the number of people without anything to offer? The idea that the average human being will produce anything he doesn't have to, much less enough to justify sharing with others, is an unrealistic approach to human nature. For every person willing to work extra hard for the good of society there will be two willing to reap the benefits of that persons hard work without giving anything in return.

Why not love everyone? Because everyone doesn't love you. In fact there are plenty of people who want to rob you, rape you, or even kill you. Someone who truly loves everyone is at a serious disadvantage in the game of survival compared to someone who has a healthy distrust of people and skepticism of their motives. Admittedly there are programs which do attempt to inform children of these dangers, but they are vastly outnumbered by the lovey dovey ones.

A society filled with people willing to forgive anything will give rise to citizens who know they could get away with anything. While the threat of severe punishment isn't what keeps all people from committing crimes it surely is the reason for some, maybe even most. Even on a personal level, some things are just unforgivable. Accepting that there are somethings you just can't forgive allows you to take a harsher more realistic stance when trying to prevent those things from happening.

I don't really think that kids everywhere are emerging into world with the warped views of reality created by these shows. Even children who don't have active and involved parents will learn the hard way long before that. I just find the contradictory values we try to instill in our children amazingly stupid.
